Congrats on your new business?

April 15, 2009 Leave a comment

Someone recently congratulated me for completing a successful year in our business.

This is wrong on 2 counts.

First, we are NOT a business. We’re a ministry. Plain and simple. We do not operate to make money. In fact, we lose money to save souls. We are VERY non-profit. We appreciate everyone’s donations because they help us to see marriages reconciled. We are a GIVING ministry – not a “getting” business.

By the way, we’ve seen 1 marriage reconciliation occur each week for the past 4 weeks! Praise the Lord.

Second, it’s not my doing that we are successful. We are a team. But most importantly, it’s the Lord’s doing. Christ alone is making our ministry VERY fruitful and successful as He is glorifying Himself. It’s all Jesus!

-Mark (to God be the glory for blessing this giving ministry that operates as a mission for the Lord Jesus Christ!)

Helping Hurting People – class begins this Friday!

January 14, 2009 Leave a comment

Our first desire is to please God and our second desire is to help hurting people. We equip believers to do the hard work of “soul care” ministry!

Since we are an equipping ministry, we seek to remind people of God’s mighty resources provided for us in this broken, fallen, and sinful world that bring healing to hurting souls.

There may be a little room left if you’d like to come join us this Friday for the class. We have approximately 40 people coming to the training class and are excited to see so many people desire to study God’s Word so they can be better able to help hurting people! Register online at our website today!

Special Thanks to all of you who are called to TIL!

I want to thank all of you who have supported our ministry by giving your time to us in prayer, time in volunteering to work in the ministry, and investing in the Kingdom through financial gifts in 2008!!!

We are so glad that you are partnering with us and could NOT do this ministry without you! It is a total TEAM effort and it is fun to watch everyone use their God-given gifts for God’s glory in serving hurting souls.

Thank you for serving Christ with us in this new, upstart ministry!

-Mark (the best is yet to come – it will be an exciting 2009 as we watch our loving Savior work in the hearts of His people)

Free of charge? Why?

December 16, 2008 Leave a comment

We made a decision early on to provide our services FREE of charge to counselees. Why?

Well, there are several reasons:

  1. We want to glorify God.
  2. God is sovereign and He alone will provide for our ministry by laying our needs upon the hearts of His children.
  3. His Word is free and we simply point people to Christ by teaching them valuable yet free principles from His Word of truth.
  4. We want to be a blessing and not a burden to the hurting souls we serve. Many of them have limited finances. We rarely counsel millionaires!
  5. We do NOT want to look like the world’s system of counseling.
  6. We do NOT want to be like the world and be driven by HOW MANY people we serve – we are focusing upon quality and not quantity. (We are not depending upon having lots of sessions to make our payroll each week though our slate is full every week right now. Praise the Lord.)
  7. We are a ministry – which means we are here to serve (not to be served by paying counselees). This one is VERY important to me. We want to give to others as our first priority. We want to be a blessing.
  8. In reality, we are simply a MISSION (similar to a homeless mission or a food-ministry in many ways since most of the people we serve are unable to pay for our services to them).
  9. Our focus is not upon money but upon serving and obeying Christ – no matter what.
  10. Because we outreach to lost people, we do not want to send a wrong signal about Christ by charging them for our services. For example, when people pay for a service, they expect a certain outcome to be produced. We cannot guarantee the results for our biblical counseling because the Holy Spirit works as He wills (not as we always want b/c He alone is sovereign). Paying counselees often expect outcomes that we cannot produce. (In reality, NO counseling program anywhere can guarantee ANY results – other than pleasing God!!!)
  11. We love watching God work. People freely give to support our ministry when they have been helped. Praise the Lord!

Sadly, many organizations charge at least $100.00 per session for their services and they are merely giving people man’s ideas, theories, and best advice – not the infallible Word of God!  Some Christian organizations are NOT even pointing people to pray and read the Bible – or to depend upon the Holy Spirit or attend church! Instead, they teach psychological theories and ideas and philosophies. It’s so sad.

I’m glad our Board wisely decided to offer our services which are very PROFESSIONAL in that we do things with excellence to the best of our ability – though it is very tough to go this route.

-Mark (professional is a term that comes from Christianity meaning that a “professional” is someone who “professes his/her faith in Christ through their vocation” – so a Christian is to act like a “professional” no matter what the vocation because he/she is “professing” Christ in all that they do – I Cor. 10:31)

A real endangered species: the intact family

October 31, 2008 Leave a comment

While we hear about all of the endangered animals in the world, one endangered group is the intact American family with one father, one mother, and biological children.

This group of people really are an endangered species in our culture.

Divorce is ripping families apart. Adultery is ripping marriages apart. Disobedient children are ripping families apart. Poor parenting is ripping families apart.

If you want to INVEST in the future of this country, invest in our ministry at TIL. We are working hard to change lives, reconcile relationships, call people to Christ, and rebuilding families all in the power of Christ.

Strength in Numbers!

October 10, 2008 1 comment

As some of you know, I’ve been furiously working on a new book called Strength in Numbers. The book should be released soon and deals with the powerful principle of teamwork in ministry. I think this book will encourage us to be more relational in life and in ministry.

As I mourn the loss of a great friend, I remember how much better life is when we share it intimately with close friends. Friends are not afraid to show each other their vulnerabilities. Likewise, in team biblical counseling, two partners must be HUMBLE and unafraid to show their weaknesses to each other: it takes courage to be humble. You must understand that there is only One who is perfect – the Lord Jesus Christ. The rest of us are growing by grace.

Marriage is the best example I can think of for partnership in ministry. Two married persons must work together to battle the lies of this world, encourage each other, and to raise godly children. It is difficult work to say the least but so rewarding when the two pull together – and become one flesh.

-Mark (thankful for my best partner in ministry, my faithful, committed, and encouraging wife, Mary)

Giving – a statistic that may surprise you!

Truth in Love endeavors to be a giving ministry! We want to be characterized by our giving spirit!

For example, we GIVE our books, booklets, and resources away to our counselees! In our 8 months of existence, we have purchased over $1100.00 in biblical counseling resources to hand to those we are privileged to serve. (We still have many of those resources on hand to give!) That is 14% of our total receipts since TIL’s inception! Praise the Lord that we can give that much already!

It is so great to give someone a biblically-sound resource, ask them to read and mark in it, and then to follow up in subsequent sessions to review and discuss it. These resources TEACH people biblical principles and expound upon the powerful Word of God so that they can understand what God is saying to them!

We are blessed to be able to give and I’m thankful for the donations provided to help us GIVE to others! Those who have given to us enable us to give to others. Giving breeds more giving and eventually our counselees will give by being obedient to do the will of the Lord Jesus Christ as they gain understanding of His Word!

God’s economy is awesome! Here’s what God Himself says about GIVING in Proverbs 11:24:

One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want.”
