“My Pastor can’t counsel someone! He’s not qualified!”

November 21, 2010 2 comments

Think of one of your favorite preachers/teachers either in the Birmingham area or around the country. Quite likely, this pastor would be a godly man, full of integrity and passion for Christ and the lost, and very knowledgeable. So would this pastor be a good counselor? Would you want to meet with this pastor for biblical counseling? Probably so.

Yet in the state of Alabama, a pastor is not qualified as a licensed professional counselor unless he has taken certain courses in school, had a supervised internship, and passed the licensing exams. He would have to know a lot about psychology to pass the exams but biblical knowledge isn’t necessary to pass those exams. So, technically, the state would not allow this pastor who may be a wonderful pastor/teacher of the Word of God to “counsel” others. He’s not qualified by state standards but is he qualified by God’s standards?

Consider this question: What is this pastor NOT qualified to use in counseling? He’s not qualified to counsel using psychological theories! He cannot (nor would he) claim to be a licensed professional counselor because that type of counsel is not what he is offering. He is not offering the ideas of a man but the truths of God.

To the above, I say: “Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord that your pastor cannot use psychology to counsel others. Praise the Lord that he is ‘limited’ to using the Holy Scriptures ONLY for the counsel he gives to others as a pastor/teacher! Praise His Name!”

That’s what I say! I see it as a blessing not a curse that your pastor must only use the Scriptures to help others! I am “limited” in that way, too, but it’s no limitation because Hebrews 4:12 states:

“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”
*

What else do we need to discern the heart of mankind other than God’s Word and the Holy Spirit? Nothing!

Your pastor IS a competent biblical counselor who is equipping others to do the work of discipleship through biblical counseling!

I would take your pastor any day to counsel me regardless of what the state of Alabama says qualifies someone to counsel.

-Mark (grateful to the Lord for your pastor and hoping he understands that he is a counselor to others from the Word of God)

The Lovelady Center needs your financial help

August 8, 2010 Leave a comment

We are in a down economy and it may get worse before it gets better. There are no shortage of needy people in this world and sadly, the number of needy people is getting higher because of the economy.

One such ministry that I am privileged to serve in is The Lovelady Center in the East Lake area of Birmingham (www.loveladycenter.org).

There are so many good, non-profit ministries in our area and in the world. Too many for me to give to all of them! But one ministry that I love as I have been behind the scenes now for several months is Lovelady. This is a special place and I really didn’t see how special at first.

The Lovelady Center is special because it does not rely on federal or state funds and teaches ladies and children to trust in God. It’s pretty simple really. And guess what…recently I’ve heard of 7 ladies who have gotten saved at TLC in the past 6 weeks so I know the Lord is working in the hearts of ladies and children there.

Therefore, I do not mind asking for your help for The Lovelady Center. This economy is hitting everyone pretty hard. I understand. I was reading Proverbs 3 this morning about trusting the Lord and how He cares for His children so I know we are all going to be fine. He will provide for you.

All I ask is that you prayerfully consider supporting the largest women’s transitional housing facility in the U.S. We have over 400 residents (315 ladies and 92 children) who are fed, clothed, taught, encouraged, challenged, and supported. It is a great work that glorifies the Lord without much government assistance!

Here’s the address and the website again is http://www.loveladycenter.org

Why I hate psychological lies (part 1)

January 27, 2010 Leave a comment

One idea of our world that is central in psychological heresy is this:

“Man is good and just does bad things.”

Wrong!

How about this biblical truth:

“Man is bad and does bad things that offend a holy, righteous, pure, and infinitely good Creator: God.”

Biblical counseling is superior to psychological counseling because we deal with the REAL problem – the sinful nature of mankind. We seek to point people to the gracious forgiveness of Christ.

Stealing – 8th Commandment

October 29, 2009 Leave a comment

The heart of God is giving. To me, that is Who God is – a Giver of life, a Giver of eternal life, a Giver of His love, a Giver in general. What can I give God that He has not first given me?

That’s why I think the 8th Commandment of not stealing is so dear to God’s heart. It is unloving to steal. It is taking rather than giving. It is taking what is not given to you and was given to someone else by the grace of God. In that sense, it is a TWOFOLD sin damaging yourself in your relationship with Christ and the person you stole from!

I love Ephesians 4:28 which gives us the antidote to stealing. The antidote is TWOFOLD: work and give to the needy.

We are to work and give to the needy. That’s why I love Truth in Love – we are a giving ministry. Most people cannot afford biblical counseling so we provide it for free thanks to your generous support of our ministry!

That’s why I also like working with Christ Health Center – they are a giving ministry providing healthcare to those in real need.

It’s a great partnership founded on the heart of God – GIVING to those in need. We all work together to give to those in need.

Take the TIL 20-20 Challenge!

September 4, 2009 2 comments

Recently, I’ve been challenged with losing 20 pounds by the end of the year 2009 – 5 pounds per month for Sep, Oct, Nov, and December.

Therefore, I thought I would issue this “challenge” to myself with YOUR help, if you willingly do so!

Encourage me to lose 20 pounds by December 20th by pledging to give Truth in Love Ministries a $20.00 tax-deductible gift to our ministry. If I weigh 20 pounds less on that day, I’ll blog and let you know. Then, if you want to, you can give TIL a small gift that will benefit you as it is fully deductible! Plus, you can partner with us in the Lord’s work through this ministry (a young person was saved this week thanks be to God and the many who financially support this ministry).

If you never hear from me again, then you’ll know I did not achieve my goal. Just kidding! I’ll blog with updates periodically so people can pledge support at different times.

I need YOUR help and encouragement so please prayerfully consider this pledge!

I need to get into better shape (not just round as the shape I’m in!) so that I can glorify God in my body and through this ministry.

Will you consider helping me by pledging your support today?

-Mark (grateful for your prayer support even more than financial support!)

Taking advantage of God’s goodness!

August 3, 2009 Leave a comment

God is so good. Do we abide in His goodness?

Living a life where we seek Him first in all things according to Matthew 6:33 is how we take advantage of His goodness. We must seek Him and His righteousness which simply means doing what is right in God’s eyes! When we do the right things, we will see the blessings of God pour out on us in this life and in the life to come eternally!

Let’s not be like those who take advantage of God’s goodness and generosity to us by continuing to sin. Let’s focus our minds on things above and seek to advance the kingdom of God!

Partner with us at TIL which is now working in Woodlawn at CHC to help the underserved!
