House Churches? Francis Chan says “Yes!”

Some of you know I am a big fan of house churches. There are a few in our B’ham area and they are very solid faith families from the ones I have visited. I guess you could think of them as small groups just without the bigger church body that meets on Sundays!

Anyway, though I am a fan, some people think house churches are crazy because they are not traditional. Most people are used to bricks and mortar and Sunday meetings and the like. There’s nothing wrong with those churches in the sense that God works in all of His people! Praise the Lord!

Here are some verses about the early church that met in homes (excerpted from the Kansas City website cited below):

So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart. Acts 2:46

And daily in the temple, and in every house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ. Acts 5:42

. . . he came to the house of Mary . . . where many were gathered together praying. Acts 12:12

Likewise greet the church that is in their house. Romans 16:5

Gaius, my host and the host of the whole church, greets you. Romans 16:23

Aquila and Priscilla greet you heartily in the Lord, with the church that is in their house. 1 Corinthians 16:19

Greet the brethren who are in Laodicea, and Nymphas, and the church that is in his house. Colossians 4:15

To Philemon our beloved friend . . . and to the church in your house. Philemon 1-2

Notice how many times “house” is mentioned as a meeting place for church. Since when did we get so bogged down with buildings?

Here’s another interesting and recent development: Pastor Francis Chan, author of Crazy Love and Forgotten God, is stepping away from his big church to start small home fellowships. Personally, I think he’s on target with his reasoning which is sound and biblical. Check out this article/interview of him for more information at http://www.christianitytoday.com/le/communitylife/discipleship/catchingwaves.html

If you are not meeting in a small group in a home OR are not going to a house church, I encourage you to do so because that’s really where intimate fellowship occurs. At Brook Hills, their small groups SERVE Christ by going on mission trips internationally and in the local community. With so many small groups, they are able to serve together in a variety of ways!

One other website to visit is http://www.christfellowshipkc.org/ – check these guys out as they are 4 house churches that are connected to each other. They meet separately weekly and after 6 weeks, all the homes meet together for fellowship, the Word, and prayer. Pretty simple, really! AND their tithes and offerings do NOT go toward overhead like buildings and power bills and the like. Their money goes straight to ministry!

I’m liking the idea more and more and will be having people over to my home soon for small group fellowships to be the church and live out our faith in community as a faith family should! Let’s be the church and serve Christ!
